Merle: While I do not accept censorship, particularly where it inhibits
what we might regard as free speech, one way of improving
communications would be to update our code of ethics (Who has actually
read it?) to include a short section on the use of the Internet for the
exchange of views between individuals and/or institutions. We should
endeavour to be honest, accurate and uninhibited in all our
communications. However, it would be incumbent on each one of us to
avoid being offensive, in particular avoid attacking each other, rather
than the views expressed.

Over the past couple of years I have tried to respond to various comments by
others - sometimes a bit tongue in cheek - like suggesting we needed elastic
walls for growing collections & display needs (& of course there are
actually wall systems that do this).
And my comment yesterday originally was blocked.
My point is that even though I feel swamped by the ever-growing demands of
"paperwork" - reporting etc, it is great to have a "conversation" with
colleagues in a wide variety of museums across the country (including the
doily and machinery ones!). I like to see those queries, (& will follow this
with one of my own) but a little chatter is good too. It's human.

If the list is meant to foster all manner of discussion on issues, theory
and practice relating to collections, and should not just be a forum for
exchanging useful information, is it worth asking what it was about
Merle's
posts that was deemed inappropriate? What were they about?
cheers
