style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>The National Trust of Australia (WA)
is deaccessioning 6,000 objects in storage that have been acquired through
donation, bequest and purchase. These collections require a substantial
monetary investment in order to manage them to accepted professional standards,
expose the Trust to unacceptable level of liability and risk and, most
significantly, they do not contribute to furthering the Trust’s mission.
Consequently the Council of the National Trust has agreed to proceed with
deaccessioning and disposal of these items.</span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=2 face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;
font-family:Arial'> </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=2 face=Arial><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>A three-stage deaccessioning process
has been developed to ensure that objects that should remain in public
collections do so and that those of no value to museums are disposed of in a fair
and equitable manner. Already objects with a known provenance have been offered
for transfer to relevant museums and collecting institutions. </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=2 face=Arial><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> </span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal style='text-align:justify'><font size=2 face=Arial><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>The Trust now wishes to advise of
the second stage which is to auction the objects within the museum community.
Participating museums may bid for objects via an auction process, not in real
dollars but rather will use the 200 NTA (National Trust of Australia) auction
credits extended to each museum when they register for the auction. The deaccessioned
artifacts may be previewed via the website only. Physical inspections are not
possible due to resource and time constraints. The actual auction will be
conducted via the internet on 26 September to save on auction fees and to allow
equitable access by regional and remote institutions. The museums that
successfully bid will have the artifacts transferred to them at no direct cost
but will have to pay for removal costs. </span></font></p>

style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>The auction will commence at 8am on
Wednesday 26<sup>th</sup> September and close at 8pm the same day. Museum
representatives will be required to register the accession number(s) of the
items that they wish to acquire and nominate how many of their museum’s
200 NTA auction credits they wish to ‘spend’ on each. The National
Trust will review the bids and advise the museum representatives of the results
via email no later than </span></font><font size=2 face=Arial><span
style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>5pm</span></font><font size=2
face=Arial><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:Arial'> Friday 28<sup>th</sup>
September.</span></font></p>

be to auction those remaining objects to the general public through a reputable
auction house. All of the funds received through the sale of deaccessioned
objects will be used to assist in the acquisition, cataloguing, conservation
and ongoing care of the permanent collection.</span></font></p>
