It may also be worth mentioning that the Museums Australia national conference 17-20 May in Newcastle is holding the workshop, A Comparative View of Collection Management Software for Small Museums, at 1 o'clock On Monday 17 May (KE Software, Mosaic, Inmagic and Vernon). If you have your written specifications (sketched out or in detail) and an idea of that standards you will be using, the workshop could be one way of killing four birds with one stone. Checking out the software is also a useful way of developing your requirements. See http://tabularium.records.nsw.gov.au/ I would also recommend you have a look at "Keeping Archives 3", produced by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) which has a chapter on managing photographs. See http://www.archivists.org.au/keeping-archives-3rd-edition. The ASA also has a special interest group for school archivists which meets regularly in Victoria. You might like to contact the Office of the ASA for contact details of the special interest group. The ASA can be contacted on office at archivists.org.au <mailto:office at archivists.org.au> or Phone 1800 622 251 (free call). cheers Catherine Catherine Robinson Senior Project Officer, Government Recordkeeping Future Proof: Protecting our digital future http://futureproof.records.nsw.gov.au/ <http://futureproof.records.nsw.gov.au/> State Records Authority of New South Wales NSW Department of Commerce Phone (02) 8247 8631 Fax (02) 8247 8626 Email: catherine.robinson at records.nsw.gov.au <mailto:catherine.robinson at records.nsw.gov.au> Postal address: PO Box 516 KINGSWOOD NSW 2747 AUSTRALIA Web: www.records.nsw.gov.au <http://www.records.nsw.gov.au> _____ From: can-talk-bounces at collectionsaustralia.net.au [mailto:can-talk-bounces at collectionsaustralia.net.au] On Behalf Of Gorman, Nathaniel Sent: Wednesday, 22 April 2009 5:03 PM To: 'Chris Otto'; 'can-talk at collectionsaustralia.net.au' Subject: Re: [can-talk] Cataloguing software Chris, 'ehive' http://ehive.com/ by Vernon Systems http://www.vernonsystems.com/ is well worth a look I suggest you source a copy of 'Cataloging Cultural Objects: A Guide to Describing Cultural Works and Their Images http://www.vraweb.org/ccoweb/cco/about.html It's import to be clear about what is being catalogued particularly when cataloguing photographic collections electronically,- Are you interested in cataloguing the original photograph or its digital image? By asking yourself 'What am I cataloguing? you'll clarify this. Roy reported he'd had a good response and I'm hoping members of the list will be kind enough to help me too. Currently I am investigating FileMaker Pro. We have an extensive photo collection and I also need to find out how best to catalogue these (as well as being able to retrieve them). Being an inexperienced novice, I'd appreciate any help.
