Dear Ian, Renee, Below is information about the PADI (Preserving Access to Digital Information) initiative, and a url http://www.nla.gov.au/padi/index.html ... Lots of information there. Digital preservation is a big issue for libraries and archives. Its objectives are: 1. to facilitate the development of strategies and guidelines for the preservation of access to digital information; 2. to develop and maintain a web site for information and promotion purposes; 3. to actively identify and promote relevant activities; and 4. to provide a forum for cross-sectoral cooperation on activities promoting the preservation of access to digital information. The PADI web site is a subject gateway to digital preservation resources. It has an associated discussion list padiforum-l for the exchange of news and ideas about digital preservation issues. International Advisory Group An international advisory group has been established to provide advice and guidance for the PADI initiative. Its members are: Mr Neil Beagrie, Charles Beagrie Ltd Ms Genevieve Clavel, Schweizerische Landesbibliothek/Bibliothèque Nationale Suisse Ms Robin Dale Dr Stephen Ellis, National Archives of Australia Dr Daniel Greenstein, California Digital Library Mr Juha Hakala, Helsinki University Library-National Library of Finland Mr. Hans Hofman, ERPANET Mr Alan Howell, Preservation Solutions Australia Mr Hans Liegmann, Die Deutsche Bibliothek Mr Johan Mannerheim, National Library of Sweden Mr. Ralph W. Mellon Foundation Mr Colin Webb, National Library of Australia Ms Deborah Woodyard-Robinson Background The PADI site owes its existence to the Australian library community which made a recommendation at the Towards Federation 2001 (TF2001) meeting in 1993 that a group comprising members from the library and archives sectors be established to develop appropriate guidelines for the preservation of information in electronic form - this became the PADI Working Party. This Group has included representatives from: the National Archives of Australia (previously Australian Archives), the Australian Council of Libraries and Information Services (ACLIS), Australian Information Industry Association Ltd, Australian War Memorial, Australian Department of Communication, Information Technology and the Arts, ScreenSound Australia, National Gallery of Australia, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia and Starlit Cooperative Multimedia Centre. In 1996, it received some funding from the Australian Vice-Chancellor's Committee (AVCC) and the following year gained support through incorporating its activities in the National Library of Australia's Australia's Cultural Network (ACN) initiative. The National Library of Australia will continue its support for this activity through its Digital Preservation Section. Some DVDs silver backing ages and becomes delaminated, at around the 4+ year mark. There are gold 'archival' standard DVDs on the market, which presumably have longer shelf lives. I would recommend all DVD works be copied as 'disk images' to a hard drives and stored in secure locations. Companies will offer reliable secure storage off site via network access. Amazon S3 offers 120GB at around USD13 per month. If you negotiate with partner organisations you could establish your own mirrored network storage at a fraction of that cost.
