Dear members I am currently engaged in a project to document the life/work of a travelling photographer who worked across northern victoria and south/ south-western NSW from 1858 to 1898. It is very possible that he was in Australia prior to 1858 and was most likely, although not definately, working in the victorian goldfields region. I have identified around twenty pictures that he took, some in private collections, NSW State Library, VIC State Library and the Museum of the Riverina in Wagga, where he was largely based. I am nearing the completion of this project which has encompassed some 15yrs now and am doing a general hunt for any pictures of his that may still be out there, perhaps even pre-1858 to help locate him prior to this time. The photographers name was William Fearne (William James Fearne), but he often advertised as Fearn or Fearns. He mostly handwrote his name and the location on the back of his pictures so no fancy illuminated advertising on the back of his cards. Although he definately worked in cdv's he also took palinotypes, tintypes, large cabinet cards, ambrotypes, calotypes and daguerreotypes. During the 1870's in particular he had pre-printed cards that said 'W. Fearne Photographer Wagga Wagga', but otherwise they were all hand signed. He often wrote accompanying script at the base of the larger photographs. His signature can be difficult to read and could pass for W Fearne, Tearn, Hearne, Learne etc.... in one illustrated newspaper his picture of the Wagga flood is accredited to W Leame... I am hoping that there may be examples of his work in some of the collections out there and would be thrilled to hear from anyone who might have any information about him or examples of his work. I have already exhausted all the usual mechanical eye avenues etc. but there may be texts or directories that I am not aware of that I would love to search if anyone is aware of any. Many thanks for your time and for any assistance anyone can offer best wishes Donna Fearne |
