More nominations needed on ABC Radio National's 'Marvellous Museums' website! (Find link to ABC home page site - below.) Make sure your museum (or any you know and love regionally) is considered for this first national award for regional museums - an initiative of ABC Radio National in 2008, in partnership with Museums Australia. The inaugural Marvellous Museums Award aims to uncover and celebrate the country's best loved museums. Wherever it may be - from Albany to Nhulunbuy - the winning museum will receive a visit from one of ABC Radio National's flagship programs and the chance to show itself off to a national audience. Indigenous Cultural Centres and Keeping Places also have the opportunity to enter their site for a separate national award - the winner of which will be the subject of an ABC Radio National Awaye! Program. Entries for the Marvellous Regional Museum Awards opened on 18 May - and ABC is anxious to harvest community responses (including through its ABC Local Radio audiences Australia-wide). ABC RN has constructed a special section of its website - and has a Guest Book for individual comments (what is your earliest memory of an experience in a museum?). The ABC has asked some of its own presenters. Check them out. To enter, museums are asked to illustrate how they can be celebrated as 'marvellous' for their stimulus to local identity, history and pride - what is it that matters about museums to their local communities, to special interest groups, to general visitors and to Australians generally? Think about what it is about a museum you know well that makes it a cherished and important part of its community . It could be a small volunteer-run local history museum, an Indigenous Cultural Centre or Keeping Place, a regional gallery, a significant historic site, a much loved botanical garden or natural site, or a museum with a distinctive & special collection. What is it about the museum, place or facility that engages people? How does it contribute value, however large or small its physical community may be? How does it involve and engage visitors? What is special about what it has, displays, provides or does for people? Depending on the response this year, ABC Radio National will assess a further edition of this Marvellous Museums Award next year. Don't miss this opportunity.
