The Interpretation Australia Association (IAA), Australia's national organisation for heritage interpretation professionals, will be holding its next annual conference in Adelaide on October 27-29 2008.

The conference theme is Hearts and Minds - connecting the rational with the emotional to create more powerful visitor experiences.

The program will be very strongly outcome-oriented with a good balance of practical and fun elements to reflect the balance between the rational and the emotional that the conference theme embodies.

Sessions will be grouped into 3 main topic streams: 1) New Audiences 2) New Approaches & 3) New Deliveries, with case studies drawn from across the cultural sector including museums, national parks and historic sites.

The preliminary structure of the conference programme is as follows:

Monday (27 October 08)

Full-day plenary and workshop sessions followed by an evening social event and tour at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. The Gardens, which celebrated their 150th anniversary in 2007, feature numerous native and exotic plant species including a new Amazon Waterlily pavilion which opened late last year. Some of the innovative interpretive techniques used at the Botanic Gardens will be showcased over the course of the evening.

Tuesday(28 October 08)

A morning of plenary and workshop sessions, followed by an afternoon of field trips exploring behind-the-scenes at various cultural destinations across the greater Adelaide area. This will be followed by a Conference Dinner at Carrick Hill, a beautiful 1930s estate with echoes of a 17th century English mansion. It boasts a considerable artistic and decorative arts collection and is surrounded by extensive gardens featuring a Children's Literary Interpretive Trail.

Wednesday(29 October 08)

Plenary and workshop sessions and conference summation / close.

A call for papers will be issued in late April, and conference updates will be posted regularly to the IAA website - www.interpretationaustralia.asn.au.

Please visit the website for the latest news or to register your interest.

Your IAA Conference 2008 committee is calling for

proposals for presentations and workshops.

The conference theme is Hearts and Minds. It's about

tugging at the heartstrings - about finding new ways to

connect the emotional with the rational to create more

powerful visitor experiences. Participants will take away

a wealth of new skills and knowledge that they can

apply in their work.

We already have some great speakers from Australia

and overseas who will explore:

. interpretation for children and families

. connecting stories and things to really big ideas

. communicating the deeply personal

. using the skills of theatre to construct great narratives

. tourism, marketing and branding

Presenters are asked to address the 'hearts and minds'

theme and to deliver useable content via one of these

three strands:

. attracting and providing for new audiences

. shaping new approaches and strategies

. finding new ways to deliver interpretation

Please fill in our Call for Presentations

form then return it to us by 30 May. We'll get back to

you by mid-July. If you have any queries please email

iaa2008 at sapro.com.au.

We really look forward to hearing from you soon!
