Hi Bronwyn You may have received an answer on this question about movies already, but a couple of points to consider. Almost every screening of any film to the public requires a screening permission from either the rights owner or the film's distributor. Recently released films will most definitely fall into this category. Distributors will generally ask for a screening fee per use. This fee can vary between some hundreds of dollars and some thousands of dollars. Only the distributor can give you a definite cost , but in our experience they can be generous if fund raising is involved for worthy causes. If you are interested in titles that are yet to be released on DVD then you will need to consider what formats are used in a cinema context and whether or not you have appropriate projection equipment and expertise available to run a screening particularly in an outdoor context. New titles are still generally released on 35mm film stock so you will require a technical set up that could support this format. You can find useful information on film, copyright and film screenings on the Australian Copyright Council website under "Film" http://www.copyright.org.au/publications/infosheets.htm Hope this helps Trish Stokes Collections Manager, Australian Centre for the Moving Image -----Original Message----- From: can-talk-bounces at collectionsaustralia.net [mailto:can-talk-bounces at collectionsaustralia.net] On Behalf Of can-talk-request at collectionsaustralia.net Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2008 12:00 PM To: can-talk at collectionsaustralia.net Subject: can-talk Digest, Vol 34, Issue 6 can-talk list digest ======================== Send can-talk mailing list submissions to can-talk at collectionsaustralia.net When replying to a topic, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than: "Re: Contents of can-talk digest..." One of the fundraising suggestions that has recently come up in discussions for the museum is doing outdoor movies during summer. Someone suggested looking into the hire of movies that aren't on DVD yet - new releases or ones that have just finished in the cinemas. I've tried doing various google searches to see where and how I can go about getting such movies and the potential hire price, but can't find anything. Before I move further on this suggestion i really need more information - can any one help? have you done something similar, do you know how much it costs and who to hire them from? Not simply a matter of showing a movie intended for personal use. You will not get current material on video. Likely to be expensive. It would be calling and chatting to their events officers or cultural development officers to find out the process. You may even find your own local council useful. Not sure where you are located but Film Victoria would be worth calling (03) 9660 3200 www.film.vic.gov.au Cheers Karlie Karlie Hawking | Community Museums Project Officer | Grampians Team Department of Planning and Community Development Office 3, Level 2 Central Square, 18 Armstrong Street South PO Box 70 Ballarat, Victoria 3353 __________________________________________________ T: 03 5327 2820 | M: 0437 849 346 | Email | F: 5327 2830 | | www.dpcd.vic.gov.au *~*Please consider the environment before printing this email*~* If you have received it in error, please notify the sender immediately and delete the original.
