Strangely I have only recently heard about this for the first time myself. I recently went to the Steam, Oil and Kerosene Weekend at the Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum at Menangle. One of the members of the organisation (and I'm afraid I cannot remember who) was telling me that the land that is now the site of the museum used to be a Chinese market garden, and that every so often bits of these wooden irrigation pipes have been dug up on the site.

If this is of interest, the museum's contact email is big-trev at bigpond.com
