Distance Learning Opportunities:

The Cultural Resource Management Program is pleased to offer distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, art galleries, cultural institutions, heritage sites and related organizations. Courses are designed to address core competencies and emerging needs of the sector and are taught by recognized leading professionals.

Our distance learning courses enable you to learn flexibly, either at home or in your workplace, at times best suited to your learning needs.  You interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community.

Museum Principles and Practices I: Community, Curatorship and Collections
September 8-December 14
Enhance your knowledge of museums through a study of core functions, purposes, and practices, and the ways in which museums share knowledge through preservation, collections, curatorship and research.

Heritage Resource Management
September 8-December 14
Expand your understanding of the nature and value of heritage resources, management approaches, frameworks for conservation and preservation, and planning processes that help ensure their sustainability.

Collections Management
September 8-December 14
Explore the evolving role that collections play in your institution and community and enhance your capacity to manage collections by developing your knowledge of crucial issues, ethics, policy, technology, accessioning, cataloguing, registration and documentation.
Instructor: Richard Gerrard is Registrar, Collections and Conservation Services for the City of Toronto

Public Programming
September 8-December 21
Examine the critical roles of interpretation and public programming as museums and heritage organizations engage their communities in meaningful and long-lasting ways.
Instructor: Candace Matelic, PhD is a consultant focusing on organizational development and museum interpretation

Curatorship: Contemporary Perspectives
September 15-December 21
Explore the contemporary role of the curator, along with collections and acquisitions policies, object-oriented research methods, documentation analysis, information management, and the communication of research through exhibitions and public programs.
Instructor: Debra Graham, PhD is a freelance curator and art historian

Courses can be taken individually for credit or non-credit or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Choose the programs and format best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
