To all who kindly replied to my email, the basket has now been
identified. It is a field surgical pannier used extensively in the
First and Second World Wars. The chains on the back were designed
so the basket could be mounted on a donkey or mule saddle. Without
chains they were designed to be stacked on vehicles and were used
extensively by all British Commonwealth armies. Some more research
is now needed to find out how it came to the district and what was
it used for.

Regards
Elaine
