Invitation to Participate

Beyond the Walls: in search of common ground

2008 Museums Australia WA State Conference

Wednesday - Saturday 10 -13 September, 2008

Bunbury, Western Australia

Museums, galleries, cultural centres and keeping places have been looking beyond the walls of their institution for inspiration, for partnerships, for common ground. As facilities converge into cultural centres and as commercial interests and business partnerships become involved, we need to explore the role of museums "beyond the walls" in their social, cultural, natural and economic environments.

The MAWA 2008 Conference in Bunbury provides an opportunity to discuss, debate, dissect, display and otherwise stimulate enthusiasm and encourage communities, collections and heritage organisations to look 'beyond the walls'.

In the South West of Western Australia, there are a large variety of heritage and museum collections, public art and tourism sites, each using a range of interpretation tools to convey their particular story and identity. The conference provides opportunities to hear and see more about places like these and to explore the interconnectivity with the more traditional idea of a museum.

The 2008 Conference will be held over four days which includes a pre-conference workshop day (Wednesday 10th), two conference days (Thursday 11th and Friday 12th) and half-day workshops and or tours at local heritage sites on Saturday 13th.

The Museums Australia WA State Conference is attended by museum practitioners, researchers, teachers, historians, consultants, industry providers, local and state government employees, local studies librarians, archivists, conservators, heritage consultants, community arts practitioners, public artists, curators.

As well as significant Keynote speakers, the Conference will also include numerous presentations, workshop and panels.

Submissions are being sought for hot topics and case studies that discuss current projects and issues.

Specific parallel sessions will include:

*	The social role of Museums in communities - outreach and community inclusion; migrant stories, indigenous culture: issues and opportunities; contemporary collecting.
*	Interpretation Technologies - new tools - exciting frontiers - electronic and social media
*	Visual and Public Art - current issues for museums and galleries; public art and sculpture; art as a tool for interpretation of place and culture.
*	Natural Heritage/Cultural Landscapes - the museum without walls; linking the landscape with built and movable heritage.

Presentations: Presentations and Papers submitted and accepted may also be suitable for publication in the conference proceedings which will be published following the conference.

Workshops: Proposals for workshops may be submitted. The abstract should include the issue being addressed, type of participation expected, relevance to conference theme/s and expected outcomes. Workshops may be for pre-conference, which will be for either a half or full day, or during conference, which will be for 1-1 ½ hours duration.

Panels: Proposals for panel sessions may be submitted. Panels comprise up to three speakers and explore a particular theme, issue or idea over approximately 90 minutes. The abstract should include the issue being addressed, names and brief background/perspective of each speaker, link to conference theme/s, intended audience and expected outcomes.

An up to 300 word abstract should be sent to the 2008 Conference Committee at ma_wa at museum.wa.gov.au by 29th March 2008.
