There are just 7 weeks left to register for IAA's BUILDING BLOCKS Conference in Sydney. We are pleased to announce that the BUILDING BLOCKS Conference will feature two international keynote speakers, Sandra Daniel from South Africa and Karl Johnstone from New Zealand. Both are sure to be inspiring presenters and will give delegates a taste of interpretation from other parts of the world. Sandra Daniels works at Robben Island Museum near Cape Town in South Africa as the Camps Officer in the Education Team. Robben Island is infamous as the place Mandela, and Sandra's father, were incarcerated. Sandra has developed the Knowledge Hunt as a learning tool and has developed exhibitions. Sandra is a youth education activist who has worked in the field of youth development since the late 1980s. Her work has exposed her to fields as varied as teenage sexuality, conflict resolution and lately heritage studies. She has been a founder member/co-founder member of a variety of youth forums such as the Lobby Group for Youth formed in 1996 to lobby against the 2004 South African Olympic bid. Karl Johnstone is of Maori, Norwegian and Scottish descent. His Maori whakapapa(genealogy) stems from the East of the North Island of New Zealand. Karl has worked in the arts and culture sector all his life including managing the interpretation team at New Zealand's National Museum - Te Papa - for approximately four years. Karl subsequently managed the Bicultural Development Team at Te Papa. He has been involved in the development of a number of cultural centres and projects also. Following the international success of Whale Rider, Karl has been engaged in the concept development for a cultural centre based in Whanagara, the location for the Whale Rider movie, and the home of Paikea - the infamous whale riding ancestor. Karl is currently Head of Department, Maori and Indigenous Development at Waiariki Institute of Technology, based in Rotorua.
