To All Collections Sector Researchers,

The Department of Education, Science and Training has commissioned a review
of the Australian Standard Research Classification through the Australian
Bureau of Statistics. Last published in 1998, it is ABS Product Number
1270.0. "This is a compendium of three classifications developed
specifically for the compilation of standardised research and development
statistics. It comprises classifications for type of activity [TOA], field
of research [RFCD] and socio-economic objective [SEO]".

This system of codes is used to classify any Australian research. For
example, if you have applied for a grant from the Australian Research
Council you would have selected a suitable code to classify your proposed
work. The coding system may also be used more informally. Some researchers
have experienced difficulties in using this system, particularly in new and
emerging fields of research.

To ensure that the voice of the Australian collections sector is heard in
this review, the Collections Council of Australia is gathering information
about the usefulness of the Australian Standard Research Classification to
submit to the review through the Council for the Humanities, Arts and Social
Sciences (CHASS).

If you have experience in using the Australian Standard Research
Classification and would like to share your opinion of its usefulness,
please respond to this email with concise feedback.
