The Big Chill: Self-censorship in an age of uncertainty

Friday March 30, 1.30pm - 5.00pm

Museum of Sydney, cnr Bridge and Phillip Streets, Sydney

Seminar one in the 2007 series Altered Perspectives: Re-examining museum
and gallery practices

As one commentator recently wrote, "museums should be able to provide
opportunities for critical, even conflicted exchanges between
communities to articulate and mediate a sense of separate as well as
shared space".*

But has the current political, social and cultural climate in Australia
made museum and gallery staff over-sensitised to potentially
controversial exhibitions and activities? How can we encourage healthy
debate on significant cultural issues that allows opposing views to be
expressed?

This seminar aims to examine the vital topic of self-censorship in
museum and gallery practice with contributions by speakers from the
media and select museums and galleries.
