Introduction:

The world of the 21st century is one of rapid, transformative change.
The social, economic and political environment in which most policy,
planning and heritage professionals operate is now so complex that many
have difficulty knowing how to incorporate issues of cultural respect,
diversity management, social equity, Indigenous and multicultural
policies into their working lives. Comprehending the significance,
function and impact that culture has in peoples' lives is central to
gaining a better understanding of how to do so. The Museum Studies
program at the University of Queensland is offering a one-week
professional development intensive focusing on conceptual frameworks and
practical case studies dealing with the different ways that museums
engage with multiple stakeholder communities.

Aim:

The aim of the Professional Development Program is to provide the
learning environment for a cohort of cultural and heritage
professionals, research higher degree and postgraduate students of
museum and heritage studies, to come together and enhance their capacity
to:

* address the social ecology of museum and heritage management in
culturally and linguistically diverse societies; * develop holistic
approaches to cultural and heritage development dealing with tangible
and intangible, movable and immovable, and natural and cultural heritage
resources * consider and evaluate case studies from different parts of
the world * apply the collective knowledge and skills of the cohort of
participants to select case studies, and * develop an action plan aimed
at bringing heritage resources and their stakeholder communities
together.

Comparative international case studies and films/documentaries will be
used to demonstrate the challenges of practice focussing on inclusive
management and leadership. It will be informed by UNESCO programming
based on its Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and the
associated Pacific Asia Observatory for Cultural Diversity in Human
Development.

Mode of Delivery: The program will be held on the UQ St Lucia campus in
Brisbane utilizing cutting edge collaborative teaching and learning
technologies. A series of interactive exercises will be conducted,
including a day of applied activities held in the Cobb & Co Museum,
Toowoomba, in regional Queensland. This intensive program is structured
around four major themes: Understanding Community Engagement, Indigenous
Peoples and Museums, Museums and Multiculturalism and Cultural Inclusion
in Museums.
