The former Yungaburra sawmill (approx 70 kms from Cairns) contains a small workshop in which there remains a quantity of belt driven machinery (some possibly dating from pre WW2) but all in working order, at least until just before Cyclone Larry hit in March 2006. The site is heritage listed. The building in which they are currently housed is now structurally unsound. The owners are planning to redevelop the site and are seeking a suitable home for the workshop contents. In addition to two lathes (one >2 m long), an airblower, and a small saw there are numerous old storage cupboards, hand tools, mounds of spare parts¹ by way of nuts, bolts and associated ephemera associated with the maintenance workshop and blacksmith¹s shop. There are some water damaged documents and manuals. It is envisaged that the structurally unsound timber frame workshop will be demolished in the next few months, thus completing the task Cyclone Larry was unable to do as it tore through the site. The equipment is available, subject to consent of the Queensland Heritage Council, on an as is where is¹ basis to a suitable museum. The owner has indicated a a willingness to help load the equipment. If anyone is interested in further information they should contact me (details below) to discuss the collection¹ (which is unregistered and uncatalogued) in more detail.
