MEDIA RELEASE, JUNE 2008 (Media release attached) Showcasing Art Deco in Regional Victoria... COMMUNITIES ENCOURAGED TO NOMINATE REGIONAL VICTORIA¹S ART DECO TREASURES FOR STATE WIDE FESTIVAL (Proposals close Friday 20 June) Following last month¹s announcement of $100,000 funding by Arts Minister Lynne Kosky for a statewide festival to celebrate and showcase Victoria¹s rich Art Deco history, communities are encouraged to nominate their Art Deco treasures and suggest programs for inclusion in the month long festival this September. Proposals are required by Friday 20 June for the Festival that will encompass Art Deco exhibitions, events, tours, activities and lectures across the state. Defined as the period encompassing the two World Wars (1914 1918 and 1939 1945), Art Deco embraced simplicity and elegance as compared to the excessively decorated styles of previous years. The explosion of colour, influences from Europe, Russia and the Orient combined with new technologies, the use of lines and curves, stylization in artwork and printing are key indicators of the Art Deco style. >From fashion and architecture to household appliances and furniture, regional Victoria has significant streetscapes and collections from the Art Deco period. Examples include the Warrackabeal Town Hall and the Wimmera Livestock Bazaar in Horsham; art deco theatres and cinemas in Ararat, Charlton and Maryborough and; collections owned and managed by community museums and historical societies such as the Castlemaine Art Gallery. Other examples of Art Deco style building and structures found in regional towns include private residences, garages, courthouses, hotels, flats, gardens, factories, swimming pools and pavilions, hospitals, toilet blocks, aviation buildings, Soldier Memorials, train stations and bathhouses. The month long Regional Festival is designed to coincide with this year¹s Melbourne Winter Masterpieces blockbuster at the National Gallery of Victoria, featuring more than 300 Art Deco treasures from around the world. Organised by London¹s famed Victoria and Albert Museum, Art Deco 1910-1939 will run at the NGV from 28 June until 5 October featuring masterworks across an extraordinary range of artistic media from stunning Cartier gems to Chanel gowns, along with paintings, photography, sculpture, furniture and even a pristine vintage vehicle. The Regional Art Deco Festival is a joint project of Museums Australia (Victoria) and the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, supported by the State Government.
