Symposium: Smart works: design and the handmade REGISTER NOW: to get earlybird rate of $440 before 16 February (full rate $550). View Attachment Smart works: design and the handmade is an exhibition opening at the Powerhouse Museum with a three-day Symposium 30 March - 1 April. The Smart works exhibition and book examine the work of 40 Australians and New Zealanders (in furniture, lighting, ceramics, metal, glass, fashion, textiles, resin) who are putting handmade objects into production. It considers some of the choices these designers are making at the interface between design and industry, and the impact of new technologies and opportunities for designing for production both at home, and in new manufacturing centres such as in the East. In the Smart works symposium six keynote speakers from the UK, Sweden, Italy, China, Australia and New Zealand, and around 20 speakers drawn from the exhibition, explore the effects on skills and identity of shifts in the West away from large manufacturing industries and towards creative industries. In particular, they will talk about their own experiences, ideas and opportunities: topics of interest to anyone working in related fields. What does the design and the handmade mean in these new contexts?
