LIVING MEMORIES OF DISTRICT SIX,

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

GUEST SPEAKER: VALMONT LAYNE, DIRECTOR, DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM

FRIDAY 22 SEPTEMBER 1.30pm-5.00pm at the MUSEUM OF SYDNEY

Cnr Bridge and Phillip Streets, Sydney

Apartheid policy in South Africa disenfranchised thousands of African
people over many years. In Cape Town an area described as District Six
underwent a shocking transformation when it was declared 'white' and
African residents were forcibly removed from their houses to an outlying
area of the city.

Today the District Six Museum acts as a reminder of the ill affect of
apartheid government and is a centre for recognising and empowering the
original residents of the area.

Australian audiences have a rare opportunity to meet Valmont Layne who
was born in District Six. Hear him speak about modern South African
history, the people his museum helps and the important role 'museums of
conscience' play in today's society.

Valmont will be joined by 4 Australian leaders in the field of community
cultural development. They are: Carolyn Bourke, Community Outreach
Librarian - Children and Youth, Fairfield City Library Service, John
Cheeseman, Director, Blacktown Arts Centre, Padmini Sebastian, Manager,
Immigration Museum, Victoria and Peter White, Indigenous Cultural
Development Officer, Arts NSW

Presented by Museums & Galleries NSW and the Museum of Sydney

$45/$35Conc (includes afternoon tea and post seminar drinks)
