A policy actively pursued by the Australian Government after the Second
World War was 'populate or perish'. Consequently, today, 4 out of every
10 people in NSW are either migrants or the children of migrants.

"Belongings" is an ongoing web exhibition recording the stories of some
of those who made the journey to Australia in the flurry of post-war
migration until 1974. These online accounts - in former migrants' own
words - give a voice to the memories and experiences of migrating to
Australia and settling in NSW. Migration changed their lives and,
through the cultures and traditions they brought with them, the lives of
all Australians forever.

"Belongings" now features 40 oral histories and provides an insight into
some of the difficulties, challenges and rewards of migration.

"Belongings" participants are photographed with their special heirlooms
and mementos that trigger their migration memories and journeys. Meet
BERYL FLETCHER and see her 1956 Christmas Day menu from Berkeley migrant
hostel in Wollongong:

"Belongings" alerts us to the importance of documenting and preserving
family memorabilia and writing down our memories. Some practical advice
and general project information is available at www.belongings.com.au
