We’re looking for a volunteer Museum Development Officer work with the team
for a period of 12 months from June 2008. Youth Ambassadors must be 30 or
under at the time of undertaking the assignment, and more information on the

Assignment Position Title:  Museum Development Officer 


Name of Host Organisation:  Vanuatu Cultural Centre (VCC)


Location: Port Vila, Vanuatu


Duration:  12  months


Description of the Host Organisation:

The Friends of Vanuatu Museum (FOVM) work closely with the Cultural Centre
to raise awareness of the museum’s work and to raise funds. The Vanuatu
National Museum and Cultural Centre is the official cultural institution of
Vanuatu. It is located in Port Vila and receives over 10 000 visitors a
year, making it the premier tourist attraction in Vanuatu. It comprises the
National Museum, the National Library, the Film and Sound Unit and the
overarching Cultural Centre. The institution employs 24 people. The National
Museum has a large permanent collection of traditional artefacts from the 83
islands of Vanuatu, including wooden slit drums, woven baskets and mats,
hand-made canoes, shell money and various items used in traditional
ceremonies. It also has a small biological collection, contemporary art
collection, and holds occasional exhibitions of local artists’ work. The
Film and Sound Unit preserves important multi-media records of cultural
events around Vanuatu, and has a video, film and tape archive dating from
the early 1900s. The National Library is housed in the same building, and
currently holds the world’s largest collection of publications on Vanuatu’s
culture and history in the three national languages, Bislama, French and
English. The Cultural Centre is the umbrella organisation that oversees the
work of the three organisations listed above, and is managed by a central
director. It is active in preserving and promoting Vanuatu’s unique cultures
and plays a crucial role in educating domestic and international audiences
about Vanuatu’s cultural diversity. It also coordinates cultural research in
Vanuatu and the unique Cultural Fieldworkers Network.

Assignment description for the AYAD:

• Work with the exhibitions team to implement the re-design of the National
Museum space 
• Coordinate the development of the temporary exhibition space and the
design of procedures relating to the use of the space 
• Recommend strategies for effective interaction and display within the
museum 
• Provide training and development to counterparts and the staff of the
Vanuatu Cultural Centre 
• Increase awareness of the Friends of the Vanuatu Museum organisation 
• Provide support for the fundraising arm of the museum 
• Work with the tour guides to increase museum attendance


Assignment outcomes to be achieved by the AYAD:

• Implemented the re-design of the interior museum space 
• Developed the temporary exhibition space as a major destination for
international, national and local exhibitions 
• Contributed to and developed a set of procedure manuals to aid staff in
museum activities 
• Improved the experience of visitors to the museum by providing expert
advice on signs and labelling 
• Conducted training sessions for Vanuatu Cultural Centre staff in issues
which are pertinent to the National Museum of Vanuatu 
• Developed best practice models and case studies in the protection and
promotion of Ni-Vanuatu culture


Qualifications required by the AYAD:

• Tertiary qualification in Cultural Heritage, Anthropology, Archaeology,
Museum Studies or similar field 
• Sound understanding of budgeting


Experience required by the AYAD:

• Experience in designing and mounting an exhibition or assisting in the
design and mounting of an exhibition with limited resources 
• Administrative or marketing experience


Desirables:

• Contacts with people or institutions willing to share knowledge on the
design and mounting of exhibitions 
• Experience working in project management (budgeting, record keeping,
websites and development of materials)


Description of assignment location:

The assignment will be located in Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu.


Information on accommodation options:

Assistance with the identification of suitable, secure and affordable
accommodation will be provided by the In-country Manager and the Host
Organisation.
