International Museum Day is this Sunday (18 May) and museums and galleries
around Queensland are ready with the state-wide event Museums Alight! in
action. Coordinated by Museum & Gallery Services Queensland, Museums Alight!
is an annual week-long, state-wide celebration that provides the opportunity
for museums and galleries in every region of Queensland to showcase their
collections, exhibitions and events to the public while taking part in the
global celebration of International Museum Day.

This year, Museums Alight! will be held from Saturday 17 May to Sunday 25
May 2008. The event will celebrate Illuminating Communities and Change a
broad interpretation of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) 2008
theme of Museums as agents of social change and development.

Some of the events being held throughout Queensland¹s cultural institutions
during the week of Museums Alight! include:
* Attend an exhibition opening and artist talk of Shaun Gladwell: Recent
Works, a 2007 Venice Biennale artist at the University of Queensland Art
Museum in Brisbane.
* Join in an Indiana Jones Archaeology Fun Day and a Public Talk at the
Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture.
* Listen to story telling in period costumes at the Charters Towers Folk
Museum in North Queensland.
* Explore Bundaberg¹s cultural institutions and be treated to nibbles, wine,
a smorgasbord dinner and sumptuous dessert on a progressive dinner.

Many more activities and events are being held throughout Queensland to
celebrate Museums Alight!. To find out which institutions are participating
and for more details on the events, visit the M&GSQ website at
