Creating Child Friendly Cultural Spaces
A FREE seminar brought to you by Museum & Gallery Services Queensland

Where: Tony Gould Gallery, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Southbank,
Brisbane QLD
When: Thursday 12 June 5pm-6.30pm
Part of The 3rd CHILD FRIENDLY CITIES SYMPOSIUM
Brought to you by QPAC, Museum of Brisbane and Griffith University at QPAC¹s
Out of the Box Festival for 3 to 8 year olds

Today we expect that child friendly cities will host child friendly museums.
What do children and carers really think about their experiences with arts
and culture in our museums?

Hear members of the Youth Advisory Group for The Edge, a dedicated space for
young people across the Cultural Centre, report on their visits to museums
and galleries. What do these children expect from child friendly museums?
How do they value their early childhood visitor experiences? Hear museum and
gallery professionals talk candidly about their insights as parents of
children aged 3-8 on family visits to museums. How responsive are museums to
children¹s needs?

* Hannah Billett and Raya Mawson-Sargeant, the youngest Edgy Advisors as
museum and gallery reviewers in conversation with Collette Brennan, Creative
Director, The Edge, State Library of Queensland
* Sandra Fields, Fieldworx on how to operate your own youth advisory group
* Andrew Moritz, Director, The Workshops Rail Museum and Louise Martin-Chew,
freelance writer, both as parent reviewers reflecting on their own family's
visit experiences.
* Early primary school visitors to Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) talking
about their engagement with and interpretation of artwork.
* Melina Mallos, Curriculum & Education Programs Officer, QAG on what
enables meaningful engagement with kids in the gallery.

Seminar Dialogue 1 - Creative Resilience
Presented in association with Arts Queensland
Community Cultural Development (CCD) has been a central feature to
large-scale, child-focussed community interventions in Queensland. This
seminar explores avenues to promote and utilise arts and cultural practices
as mechanisms to support these interventions.

Seminar Dialogue 3: Children's Mobility
Presented in association with Urban Research Program, Griffith University
There is significant interest in the issue of child travel and independent
mobility, or lack thereof, in Australian cities, with significant
implications for planning and design. This Dialogue brings current research
to a practitioner audience in Brisbane.

Seminar Dialogue 4: Children's Relationship to the Built Environment
Child-friendly design is an increasingly recognised and critical component
in creating more child-friendly urban environments. The Dialogue will focus
on public and private child- friendly buildings and spaces that have young
children's interests and welfare in mind as well as an authentic sense of
place.
