Museums Australia WA is pleased to invite you to consider the question:

Your Place or Mine?

the implications of co-location and convergence of facilities on the
collecting sector

Join our panel discussion exploring the implications of convergence for
cultural institutions.

Where? The Bakery, James St Northbridge,

When? Thursday 7th August, 5.30pm for a 6pm start

The field is abuzz with the term convergence - traditional boundaries
are being questioned as libraries, archives, museums and galleries
consider closer collaboration and a convergence of facilities.

The laboratory of the digital realm is seeing convergence tested and
probed with the digital preservation of collections raising common
concerns, and information management and online education opening up new
frontiers of collaboration.

But are our distinct identities worth preserving, or can a hybridised
cultural facility provide new frontiers of experience and greater access
to our cultural resources?

Will the blurring of boundaries result in facilities in which one
element is prioritised over others and therefore herald a loss of access
to cultural resources?

Are the distinct cultural experiences of visiting a library, museum and
gallery, each with their specific forms of social behaviour, use of
space, delivery of content and audience engagement, being jeopardised?

Finally, what are some of the benefits and pitfalls of cultural facility
convergence for our community of users and audiences?

Convergence will inevitably create a new public, with new forms of
behaviour, interaction and use. In creating a new public, what sort of
community will result?

Margaret Birtley, CEO Collections Council of Australia, will address
some of these issues as she paints a picture of the emerging trends in
Australia, and their possible implications.

A panel representing the various domains within the collecting sphere
will present their views and concerns and there will be the opportunity
for the audience to pose questions or provide their opinion.
