Medieval Faire Day Free fun at the State Library Sunday 20 April, 10am–4pm Join in a day of free family activities at the State Library of Victoria, to celebrate the magnificent exhibition The Medieval Imagination: Illuminated manuscripts from Cambridge, Australia and New Zealand. The Middle Ages come alive from 10am with sword-fighting, games, music and dance, calligraphy and illumination, storytelling and drawing workshops, arts, craft and culture demonstrations, and more! Highlights include... 11–11.45am: The curator in conversation Professor Margaret Manion AO, curator of the The Medieval Imagination, shares the challenges and rewards of mounting this landmark exhibition. 12–12.30pm and 2–2.30pm: Medieval music concerts The enchanting sounds of the Early Music Consort, performing on medieval instruments. 1.10–1.15pm: Handbells ringing in the dome A rare and atmospheric performance of handbells under the Library’s famous dome. 1.30–2.15pm: In the company of dragons: Carole Wilkinson in Conversation The popular author of Dragonkeeper, Dragon Moon and Dragon Companion – an Encyclopedia discusses her work. 2–2.45pm: Feudal fashions on the field Check out the fashions of centuries past, from peasant garb to upper-class finery. 2.30–4pm: Dragon-drawing experience / Youth literature out loud Capture the mythical essence of dragons on paper or hear stories set in dragon-infested medieval times. 3–4pm: Medieval mythbusters From Vikings to the Da Vinci Code – Andy Muirhead, host of the ABC’s The Collectors, and a panel of experts debunk some common medieval misconceptions. Featuring Wizard Daffyd, Prof. Constant Mews, Kerry Greenwood and Prof. Kate Burridge.
