Join us for a month of inspiration at Museum and Gallery Services
Queensland! 

Quality Public Programs ­ Beyond Visitor Numbers is a suite of exciting
events highlighting local, national and international work at the
intersection of public programs and audience development. This fantastic
program is sure to make November a very inspiring and informative month of
professional development for all our Queensland constituents.

Free Lunchtime Lecture
Date: Monday 12 November
Time: 12.30 ­ 1.30pm
Venue: Queensland Museum Lecture Theatre

Sandra Daniels is a member of the Education and Training Department at the
Robben Island Museum, Cape Town. Sandra is a youth education activist who
has worked in the field of youth development since the late 1980s. Robben
Island, is infamous as the place Mandela, and Sandra¹s father, were
incarcerated. She will be presenting her work on education programs such as
the Knowledge Hunt, an interactive educational tour that ensures the
integration of both the cultural and environmental aspects of a site to
ensure conservation awareness. Sandra Daniels is in Australia courtesy of
Building Blocks ­ Interpretation Australia's National Conference, 6 ­ 9
November 2007 in Sydney.
 
 
Masterclass: 
Developing Museum Learning Resources for School Students

David Milne, Christine Milne and Allan Morrison from the Strategic Learning
Team at Queensland Museum will present information about the development and
design of museum learning programs and meeting the expectations of schools
teachers and students. Queensland Museum¹s Strategic Learning Team recently
received a 2007 M&GSQ Gallery and Museum Achievement Award for their
Journey of Understanding: Refugee and Cultural Diversity education kit. To

Understanding and Enhancing Visitor Experiences Through Evaluation and
Visitor Research

Dr Jan Packer is a Senior Research Officer in the School of Tourism at the
University of Queensland. Jan teaches in Interpretation and Visitor Research
in the UQ Museum Studies program, and is involved in several major visitor
research projects in Australia, USA, Canada and China.  This masterclass
will enable you to understand the principles and methods of visitor and
exhibition evaluation as well as to develop new insights into museum and
gallery visitors¹ needs, experiences and behaviour.

* Museum  & gallery staff working on exhibitions, public programs, education
programs, marketing, evaluation and visitor research.

Step by Step through the Web: Building an effective online strategy for your
organisation

Joy Suliman, Project Manager ­ Collections Australia Network (CAN), will
provide guidance on improving your organisation¹s web presence and will
broaden your knowledge and skills in applying low-cost and practical ideas
in the online environment. The session will also include advice on creating
good web content and engaging your audiences with social media such as
blogs, wikis and podcasts.

* Volunteers or staff from a cultural organisations with limited online
resources 
* Staff responsible for marketing and communications strategy
* Collection managers and administators
* Regional and smaller arts organizations seeking an online presence

The values toolkit - Advocating museums and galleries

Dr Carol Scott, Manager of Evaluation and Audience Research at the
Powerhouse Museum will present a masterclass with the express purpose of
empowering the museums and galleries sector to clearly articulate the worth
of museums and galleries to bureaucrats and politicians, using a typology of
value supported by evidence. This topic is also the subject of Carol¹s PhD
in which she has conducted primary research with the professional sector and
the general visiting and non-visiting public.

* Evaluation and audience research managers and staff

SEMINAR

At just 29 years old Lauren Parker is Head of Contemporary Programmes,
Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), and oversees the V&A's program of
contemporary exhibitions, installations and live events. She will be a
keynote speaker at this Seminar, along with Associate Professor John
Armstrong, Philosophy Department, University of Melbourne. John researches
aesthetics and the philosophy of emotions and is the author of Conditions of
Love: The Philosophy of Intimacy and Move Closer: an intimate philosophy of
art. He is currently working with Dr Damon Young on an ARC Linkage Project
Aesthetic Education and Public Galleries (with partnered organisations: The
University of Melbourne, the National Portrait Gallery and The Johnston
Collection).
