Caring for Textiles

Almost all collecting organisations have textiles. Textiles are fragile
objects requiring particular care to ensure their long-term
preservation.Museums Australia (Victoria) are offering a workshop
designed to assist custodians of textile collections. This workshops is
part of our support to communities in their efforts to preserve and
interpret their collections. The workshop will be a great opportunity
to get together with other collection carers from your loca area. We
will cover the common causes of deterioration and the ways in which the
care of textiles differs from other collection items. We will also
focus attention on best practice in collecting and displaying textiles.
The workshop will be conducted by Christina Ritschel. Born in Denmark,
Christina received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Fashion Institute of
Technology in New York and a Masters of Science at the Winterthur Museum
and University of Delaware Program of Art Conservation. She now works
for the National Gallery of Victoria and the State Library of Victoria
in Melbourne as well as offering conservation services for other
cultural organizations and private clients. She has previously worked at
institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the
Cathedral of Saint John the Devine in New York, the Textile Museum in
Washington D.C., and the National Museum of Denmark.
