Quality Public Programs Beyond Visitor Numbers is a suite of exciting events organised by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland to highlight local, national and international work at the intersection of public programs and audience development. This fantastic professional development program features a high profile seminar, a free lunchtime lecture and a series of masterclasses all supported by an Arts Queensland Strengthening the Sector grant. Our masterclasses are tailored for everyone from the most experienced museum and gallery professional to volunteers. Masterclass presenters have suggested the audiences appropriate for each session to help you decide which ones are best for you. Sandra is a youth education activist who has worked in the field of youth development since the late 1980s. Robben Island, is infamous as the place Mandela, and Sandra¹s father, were incarcerated. She will be presenting her work on education programs such as the Knowledge Hunt, an interactive educational tour that ensures the integration of both the cultural and environmental aspects of a site to ensure conservation awareness. Sandra Daniels is in Australia courtesy of Building Blocks Interpretation Australia's National Conference, 6 9 November 2007 in Sydney. Jan teaches in Interpretation and Visitor Research in the UQ Museum Studies program, and is involved in several major visitor research projects in Australia, USA, Canada and China. This masterclass will enable you to understand the principles and methods of visitor and exhibition evaluation as well as to develop new insights into museum and gallery visitors¹ needs, experiences and behaviour. Suggested Audience: * Volunteers or staff from a cultural organisations with limited online resources * Staff responsible for marketing and communications strategy * Collection managers and administrators * Regional and smaller arts organizations seeking an online presence * Any staff looking to expand or develop online content Masterclass: The values toolkit - Advocating museums and galleries Date: Friday 16 November Time: 2.00 5.00pm Venue: Cinema B, Gallery of Modern Art Cost: $45/$35 concession for MAQ/RGAQ members, students, volunteers Registration: Required * Level: Intermediate/Advanced Dr Carol Scott, Manager of Evaluation and Audience Research at the Powerhouse Museum will present a masterclass with the express purpose of empowering the museums and galleries sector to clearly articulate the worth of museums and galleries to bureaucrats and politicians, using a typology of value supported by evidence. This topic is also the subject of Carol¹s PhD in which she has conducted primary research with the professional sector and the general visiting and non-visiting public. Be at The University of Queensland Art Museum by 1.00 pm for a special 50-minute guided tour of the Paddy Bedford exhibition by Ken Watson, Gallery Director, Jirrawun Arts, Kununurra (WA). (See exhibition more information in the next event entry below) Lauren Parker is Head of Contemporary Programmes, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), and oversees the V&A's program of contemporary exhibitions, installations and live events. She will be a keynote speaker at this Seminar, speaking on Interplay: Dialogues between museum spaces and museum visitors, an examination of her exhibitions Shhh... Sounds in Spaces (2004) and Touch Me: Design and Sensations (2005) as two different examples of using technology to actively engage museum visitors with objects and architectural spaces within the V&A. Lauren will demonstrate use of digital technologies across the museum that engender a more intimate, individualised and responsive museum experience. Another keynote speaker is Associate Professor John Armstrong from the Philosophy Department, University of Melbourne. John researches aesthetics and the philosophy of emotions and is the author of Conditions of Love: The Philosophy of Intimacy and Move Closer: an intimate philosophy of art. He is currently working with Dr Damon Young on an ARC Linkage Project Aesthetic Education and Public Galleries (with partnered organisations: The University of Melbourne, the National Portrait Gallery and The Johnston Collection). UQAM Event Paddy Bedford¹ exhibition tour at the UQ Art Museum Date: Monday 19 November Time: 1.00 pm Venue: University of Queensland Art Museum Cost: Free Paddy Bedford¹s paintings are a combination of modern materials and traditional pictorial conventions, contemporary experience and ancient belief systems. Born around 1922 on Bedford Downs Station in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia, Mr Bedford began painting on canvas and board in 1998 and continued until his recent passing in 2007. His artistic practice in that time was remarkably prolific and innovative. A senior lawman of the Gija people, he painted as part of ceremony all his life, and brought this wealth of symbolic, historical and technical knowledge to bear on his art.
