INITIATIVES, IDEAS AND INTERACTION, SHARING OUR STORY

22 - 25 August, 2007 Alice Springs

This year's Australian Society of Archivists Conference has a
deliberately local flavour - a celebration of what Australia and New
Zealand has to offer in archival practice and theory.

We have tried to cater to a wide array of archivists, recordkeepers and
to those that use the products of our labours. We've also thrown in some
topics into the mix that haven't worn an ASA jersey for a while, such as
Sporting Archives, Business Records, Scientific Records and Oral
History.

There are also papers on government recordkeeping, indigenous records
and recordkeeping and discussions on what is happening in different
regional collections. Our plenary speakers will seek to challenge us, to
question who we are, where we going and what we can do to develop the
profession. They will consider how we can meet the demands of the
present and that of the future.

The theme of this Conference is Initiatives, Ideas and Interaction,
Sharing our Story. You could easily add Identity to this theme and many
of the papers consider who we are and where we 'fit in' to businesses,
government, schools and society.

Before the Conference there is the opportunity for delegates to attend a
number of pre-conference activities such as the RAPPSIG seminar, a
Digital Futures forum or a workshop on presentation skills. The Special
Interest groups will be getting together at a number of locations around
The Alice before the Annual General Meeting is held at the Alice Springs
Convention Centre. And the Greatest Little Archives in the Desert will
be offering tours of their facilities.

Then of course there is the opportunity to network at the social events,
including a Welcome Cocktail function at the Convention Centre and what
promises to be a wonderful dinner under the stars at the Alice Springs
Desert Park.

You will find The Alice an interesting place, a true meeting place of
cultures and ideas. It is physically beautiful, surrounded by the red
MacDonnell Ranges and a vast expanse of blue sky, uncluttered by
skyscrapers, tall buildings or smog.

We want you to be comfortable while you are here, so dress in layers. In
fact we'd like you to be comfortable enough to wear jeans if you wish.
However, we do draw the line at track pants!

Therefore on behalf of the Conference Committee, let me invite you to my
town, the town of Alice Springs, where every breeze is a sea breeze.

Pat Jackson
