THE rise of the book in medieval Europe was the result of a perfect union 
of scholarship, artistry and industry. Illuminated manuscripts - their 
calligraphy and illustrations patiently produced by monastic scribes - 
became portable repositories of knowledge, especially the sacred texts of 
Christianity.
