FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 3 April 2007 Media Release WANDERLUST A travelling exhibition of Artists' books on travel Liz Jeneid and Alexander Arcus WANDERLUST will be opened by Catherine Kenneally, writer and broadcaster at 6 pm Friday 20 April 2007 at the Flinders University City Gallery, State Library of South Australia, North Terrace, Adelaide. WANDERLUST is a travelling exhibition of Artists’ Books which looks at the process of notation by two artists of their travels in Australia and overseas. There is a questioning of the forms such books may take and the many approaches to expressing content using both text and image. The books range from collections of drawings or prints of a journey or place, to the ephemera of travel, or to images which the artist associates with a particular place. Both artists use a variety of print techniques ranging from intaglio and embossing by hand to computer prints, often on handmade paper. A variety of bookbinding techniques have been used and considerable thought given to the display of the books. Alexander Arcus is an artist working in paint, textiles and paper. He has exhibited his work consistently in Australia and overseas with ten solo and more than thirty group exhibitions. In 2003 he held an exhibition of landscape paintings at the Prospect Gallery in Adelaide and in 1997 and 1998 held a major exhibition of paperworks at the Jam Factory, Adelaide and the Municipal Craft Centre, Melbourne. He has received several commissions primarily for tapestries and his work is in several public and private collections in both Australia and overseas. In 1982-3 he was Lecturer in Textiles at the Newcastle School of Art, Newcastle College of Advanced Education. In 1995 he withdrew from teaching in order to return to professional practice as an artist. He received his initial training in Industrial Design and in recent years has studied papermaking and printed textiles in Japan and undertaken consultancy work with a papermill in the Philippines. Alexander Arcus is resident in Adelaide with studios equipped for painting, printmaking and the weaving of tapestry and brocade textiles.
